Sea search resumes for men

2012-01-19 06:46

Searches resumed today for two men swept out to sea and presumed drowned in Cape Town.

Yesterday, Igshaan Ariefdien (27) went missing at Mnandi beach and Jerome Booysen (35) at Milnerton lagoon beach. The men were named by the Cape Town Disaster Risk Management Centre.

National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesperson Craig Lambinon said Ariefdien, from Lost City in Mitchells Plain, had been boogie-boarding with a friend when he went missing in strong rip currents. His companion was able to swim to safety.

Booysen, from Rugby in Cape Town, had been trying to rescue two women – one of them his niece – in the surf when he got into difficulty himself. The women swam to shore unaided.

Police divers and NSRI Table Bay would continue searching today, although police had already opened an inquest docket, Lambinon said.
