Johannesburg’s newest master bartender will be named tonight?–?and enter a world in which top drink mixers can earn up to R45?000 a month.

Besides the Master Bar Academy training bartenders in the art of mixing, they also learn about flairing, in which they mix drinks by tossing and juggling cocktail shakers and liquor bottles, and making flaming drinks.

The winner must know about boozy beverages, different brands, their histories and have the savvy to rack up a huge turnover for the boss.

The final will held at posh Sandton hotel The Maslow. The 30 hopefuls will be tested for their speed, the taste of their concoctions and the ability to mix the spirits just right. They will be whittled down to five semifinalists, who will each pick a classic cocktail’s name from a hat and prepare the very best version of the drink in question.

Whoever’s creation will go down the best with the judges will be named the master bartender.

“This means you will be able to work at world-class bars,” says Denzel Heath (30).

He says he studied to become an accountant, but decided to become a master bartender trainer instead.

Heath says there is a misconception that it is only the people who fail at other careers who become bartenders.

“Nothing can be further from the truth. There’s a growing trend around the globe where young professionals quit their nine-to-fives to become bartenders. You get paid, it’s fun and you get to see the world.”

Heath has been working as a bartender for 14 years. He says that masters’ salaries range from R10?000 for beginners to R45?000 for veterans.
