Security guards thwart robbery

2011-02-19 07:41

A 35-year-old man was arrested in Vosloorus yesterday for attempted business robbery, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, Gauteng police said.

The man’s attempt to rob a butchery was thwarted by two security guards, who saw him and his accomplice at a shopping centre in Vosloorus.

“Two security guards were on duty when they saw two suspects at Lucky’s Shopping Complex,” Constable Rufus Tema said.

“One security guard went into a butchery leaving his colleague in their vehicle. Then one suspect ordered the security guard and everyone in the butchery to lie down,” he said.

The 35-year-old fired a shot at the security guard who was still in the vehicle, and he shot back.

A woman was injured during the shoot-out and taken to hospital, Tema said.

The man was expected to appear in the Vosloorus Magistrates Court soon.

His accomplice fled the scene.
