Selebi admitted to hospital

2011-12-02 11:35

Former police commissioner Jackie Selebi has been admitted to hospital after reportedly collapsing when he heard he would have to begin serving his 15-year jail term for corruption.

Selebi was taken to the Netcare Jakaranda Hospital near his Waterkloof Ridge, Pretoria, home just hours after the Supreme Court of Appeal ruled against his appeal to have his sentence overturned.

The former top cop had initially emerged to greet guests, including his nephew and brother, and appeared relaxed, but did not come out again after the court’s decision was announced.

About an hour later, a private ambulance and response vehicle arrived at the Selebi home.

The ambulance was backed up to his doorway and Selebi was stretchered into it, before being transported to the nearby private hospital.

Selebi now has a little over 40 hours to report in order to begin serving his jail sentence.

His lawyer, Wynanda Coetzee, said “the commissioner didn’t take the judgment very well”.

Before the ambulance left his driveway, a conscious Selebi was seen in the back of the ambulance in a semi-reclined position, with a heart rate monitor attached to his finger.

Two uniformed police officers are guarding the entrance to the hospital.
