Selebi sent home

2012-07-20 09:23

Former police commissioner and convicted fraudster Jackie Selebi has been released from jail on medical parole only 229 days into his 15-year sentence.

Correctional Services Minister Sbu Ndebele announced in Pretoria this morning that Selebi was in the last stages of his “irreversible kidney paralysis”.

Selebi, Ndebele said, would be released along with three other prisoners who had been granted medical parole.

Ndebele said the decision to release Selebi was taken by the Medical Parole Advisory Board on June 20.

He said Selebi would not be immediately discharged from the Steve Biko Academic Hospital where he has been receiving treatment since February this year.

Deputy Correctional Services Minister Ngoako Ramathlodi said Selebi would not be returned to prison should his condition improve or if he was able to receive a kidney transplant.

“This decision was not about any morals but it was about a medical decision that was taken,” said Ramathlodi.

He said strict parole conditions would be laid out for Selebi, but these had yet to be drafted.
