Semenya sets meeting record

2010-09-10 09:25

Caster Semenya got back to winning ways at the Notturna di Milano athletics meeting in Milan, Italy, last night, clocking a 1:58.16 meeting record and season’s best to secure victory in the women’s 800m race.

Semenya won two low-key races in Finland after she was cleared to run against women in July and placed third at her first Diamond League meeting in Brussels two weeks ago.

Four days later she trailed home in ninth place in a shocking 2:07.16 at a meeting in Rovereto.

But the 19-year-old world champion shrugged off questions about her fitness and reaffirmed herself as favourite for the Commonwealth Games title in Delhi next month, easily beating in-form and controversial French athlete Hind Dehiba.

Dehiba, who was cleared to compete in February last year after a two-year doping ban, secured gold over 1?500m at the Continental Cup in Split at the weekend but Semenya held her off by more than half a second in Milan to break her mini-losing streak.

Double amputee Oscar Pistorius finished fourth in the men’s able-bodied 400m race in 46.48, with Australian Ben Offereins edging him for third by only 0.01 seconds.

Nery Brenes of Costa Rica won in 45.52.
