Semenya welcomed back home

2009-08-26 09:31

ATHLETICS South Africa (ASA) has called on South Africans to support gold

medallist Caster Semenya, just as they did Oscar Pistorius.

Double amputee, Pistorius also caused controversy two years ago when he won

the 100, 200 and 400 metres against able bodied athletes in Lucerne,

Switzerland.

ASA president, Leonard Chuene, rubbished reports that the controversy around

Semenya was started by Australians and said there ‘‘was evidence that it was

started by the South African media as early as March”.

He refused to divulge further information to substantiate his claims.

He said as an organisation they did not need any scientists to tell them that

Semenya is a girl.

“The only way one distinguishes between a man and a woman, we look there,”

said Chuene.

“The only scientists who can tell us about the gender of Caster are her

parents,” said Chuene.

He appealed to the South African media to give her time to rest as she had

gone through a very joyful yet traumatic experience.

Semenya was also given a gift of R60 000 by the ANC Youth league for her “to

relax and enjoy”.
