Serbian victory extra-sweet

2010-06-18 15:56

Long after the final whistle was blown, hundred of Serbian fans

were still dancing on the terraces of the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Port

Elizabeth, waving flags, drinking beer and hugging anyone who happened to be

passing by – German, South African, British, it didn’t matter at all.

“I am so happy I am crying,” said a fan named Phillip. “This

victory is the sweetest of all time.”

The Serbian fans were happy not only because the 1-0 win over

Germany boosted their chances of making it through to the next round, a prospect

that had seemed in danger after the side’s 1-0 defeat to Ghana in the opening

game.

“It is the first time in 10 years we have beaten a team ranked in

the top 10 by Fifa,” said one Jasna. “And because it’s Germany it’s extra

special.”

Adding to the jubilation was the fact that this was the first

victory for the Serbian national team since it evolved from the

Serbia-Montenegro team to play independently.

“This is the first victory for our flag,” said a fan called Milan

as he pulled the flag so hard he almost ripped it apart. “The taste of a Serbian

victory is wonderful.”
