Seven dead, 76 hurt in bus crash

2011-09-22 08:50

Six children and an adult died when their bus overturned in Siloam, near Thohoyandou, this morning, Limpopo police said.

The bus was transporting children and their parents from Khakhu village at 3.30am when it went out of control on a downhill bend, left the road and overturned, Colonel Ronnie van Niekerk said.

Five children and a parent died on the scene. Another child died later in hospital.

Van Niekerk said 76 others, including the driver, sustained various injuries. They were taken to the Siloam and Polokwane Hospitals.

“The bus was rented by a creche in Khakhu ... they were going on a trip to Pretoria to do sightseeing and visit the zoo.”

“The investigations are receiving the highest priority. We will decide whether the accident was caused by human error or a mechanical fault.”
