Several motorists and passengers were rescued after they were trapped in flooded roads in Soweto.

“They were rescued at Klipspruit Valley and New Canada roads after their vehicles were trapped as a result of heavy rainfall. The roads remain closed,” said City of Joburg emergency services spokesman Robert Mulaudzi today.

Four people from two sedans and a taxi were rescued at New Canada road, opposite New Canada train station.

The vehicles were trapped on the flooded road under a bridge this morning.

Three other people were also rescued from two vehicles at Klipspruit Valley road in Nancefield.

No injuries were reported, said Mulaudzi.

“Motorists are advised to use alternative routes as flooded roads have been closed off for traffic at least until the water subsides.”

Mop-up operations were under way in Orlando West, Soweto, after houses were flooded.

“Two flooding incidents were reported in Orlando West, where a couple of houses were flooded. There were no injuries reported,” said Mulaudzi.

A lightning incident was also reported in Diepkloof, where two houses were struck by lightning.

No one was injured.

“Mop-up operations have already started in both incidents. Disaster management officials are on scene to assist the affected households.”

A part of the M2 highway was also flooded, he said.

Heavy rainfall and cold weather was experienced in most parts of the country during the past 24 hours.

The SA Weather Service has indicated that the rain and cold weather would last throughout the weekend.
