Sex with ex popular form of cheating – survey

2013-09-22 06:00

The majority of South Africans who participated in a survey by extramarital dating site Ashley Madison admitted to having contacted an ex in the hope of hooking up.

The survey asked registered users whether they had ever contacted a former flame in the hope of hooking up, to which 70% answered yes.

CEO and founder of Ashley Madison Noel Biderman says one of the reasons for this form of cheating was because “rekindling an old relationship is easy, familiar, and may not actually feel like cheating”.

While the majority of users considered sleeping with an ex, only 32% have done it.

With more than 163 000 South African members, the site’s poll showed a 62% and 38% gender split between male and female cheaters, respectively.

Most male cheaters were between 30 and 39 years old while their female counterparts were younger – 18 to 29.

People over 60 were the least likely to cheat.

Men had an average of four partners while women had two.

The site’s white members, both male and female, topped the list of cheaters, followed by black, coloured, Indian and Asian users.

Biderman says he was not surprised to see so many users getting back together with former university partners.

“These relationships bring back nostalgic memories of a time before kids, mortgages and responsibilities – but these hookups always run the risk of being caught.

We see an influx of people joining the site who seek discreet, online affairs with like-minded strangers to eliminate the dangers that come with having sex with an ex,” he added.

Other findings include:

» At least 33% of cheaters admitted to finding their former flame on Facebook while 12% reconnected at school reunions. A staggering 50% of users confessed to hooking up with a former university partner; and

» At least 28% actively sought out their ex by searching for them online, while 26% made use of their connections with mutual friends to hook up.
