Ephraim ‘Shakes’ Mashaba has been appointed the new Bafana Bafana coach.

Mashaba takes over from Gordon Igesund, whose contract was not renewed by the South African Football Association (Safa).

Speaking on the phone from Mali, where he was set to oversee a friendly involving the Under-20 national team, Mashaba said: “I am honoured by Safa’s gesture.”

Mashaba had appeared a popular candidate prior to the announcement and it came as no surprise when Safa president Danny Jordaan said: “The technical committee presented two names – Carlos Quieroz and Shakes Mashaba – to the national executive committee. Mr Mashaba received the vote of all the members with no defiant voice.”

This will be Mashaba’s third stint as Bafana coach. Nobody has bettered his record as manager of the national team.

Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula said: “I am very pleased with Safa’s decision to appoint Mr Mashaba as coach. I am thrilled that they settled for a local coach from the list of candidates.”

Jordaan said Mashaba would still guide the Under-20 team in their African Youth Championships qualifier against Cameroon.

Safa will then sit down with him to determine the way forward.
