Shilowa not ‘remarrying’ ANC

2011-05-17 12:58

Congress of the People co-founder Mbhazima Shilowa has denied rumours that he was planning to leave the party and rejoin the ANC.

“I will never, ever go back to the African National Congress as long as I live,” he told reporters in Johannesburg on the eve of the local government elections.

He claimed the rumours and a report on SABC were started by Cope co-founder Mosiuoa Lekota.

He said he would also not vote tomorrow, calling the candidate list submitted to the Independent Electoral Commission “fraudulent”. This was however not a call for Cope supporters to boycott the election.

Shilowa left the ANC in the wake of former president Thabo Mbeki’s resignation. He was also a premier of Gauteng.

He resigned as premier and from the ANC in 2008 with former ANC chairperson Lekota and deputy defence minister Mluleki George. Lekota called the split a divorce.

The party has been unable agree on who its president is.

Asked on clarity over his position, Shilowa said he was expelled as deputy president in February.

A court interdict banned him from calling himself president.

He said Lekota had no mandate to act for the party and that the “legal leadership” of Cope had decided rather to isolate Lekota.
