Shivambu conviction a ‘witch-hunt’

2011-11-16 12:59

The conviction of ANC Youth League spokesperson Floyd Shivambu smacks of a witch-hunt, the organisation’s president Julius Malema said today.

On Thursday last week, the ANC’s national disciplinary committee found Shivambu guilty of misconduct for swearing at a journalist, and for accusing the ruling party of associating with imperialists in a statement.

Malema told reporters in Joburg that Shivambu had issued the statement on behalf of the league and not in his personal capacity.

“He [Shivambu] was not the author.”

Shivambu was suspended from the party for three years and told to vacate his position as spokesperson.

“He remains an employee of the youth league until the youth league decides to retrench him,” said Malema.

“You don’t have to be elected as a spokesperson of the youth league.”

Malema said it was not right for Shivambu to be fired for being a contact person on a statement.
