Shivambu fails to appear in court

2011-11-16 09:00

Suspended ANC Youth League spokesperson Floyd Shivambu and his attorney have failed to appear in the Johannesburg Equality Court for his hate speech hearing, The Times reported today.

Shivambu has been accused of calling former Independent Newspapers journalist Carien du Plessis stupid and a “white bitch” in text messages.

Du Plessis alleged that in an SMS exchange between herself and Shivambu, he wrote: “You must learn to respect people. I don’t comment on YCL [Young Communist League] issues and please stop being stupid.”

He also allegedly wrote: “I wouldn’t want to earn respect from white bitches ... so dream on.”

The newspaper reported that advocate Karabo Kgoroeadira said she would apply for a postponement as Shivambu’s papers had not been properly supplemented.

She said she would not proceed with the case without an instructing attorney.

Kgoroeadira said the failure of Shivambu’s attorney Andries Nkome to appear in court was unbecoming.

The case was postponed until December 7.
