Former ANC Youth League spokesperson Floyd Shivambu said he found the decision to expel him “hilarious”.

“In all the public statements I have made since my suspension from the ANC, I have unequivocally said that I give away my membership of the Zuma African National Congress (ZANC) and consequently the ZANC Youth League,” he said in a statement.

“In the recent past, I have openly and proudly associated with economic freedom fighters, an economic emancipation movement, which is speaking to the people of South Africa on the possibility of contesting ... the 2014 general elections.”

He could not associate himself with a party which was “directionless, possibly the most corrupt, and openly neo-liberal, right-wing political formation”.

“I have long ago lost confidence on the capacity of the ANC to take South Africa forward...,” Shivambu said.

Last year, Shivambu was suspended from the ANC and its youth league for three years.

Recently, the former spokesperson had become vocal in his criticism of the ANC, President Jacob Zuma, and the ANCYL national task team (NTT).

He had been issuing critical statements on behalf of the Economic Freedom Fighters, a political platform recently launched by expelled ANCYL president Julius Malema.

The ANCYL NTT announced today that it had expelled Shivambu.

The decision was made by the NTT and not by the ANC, convenor Mzwandile Masina told reporters in Joburg.

“We are not speaking for the ANC, we are speaking on the decision we have taken as the ANCYL.”

Masina said Shivambu had defined himself outside the ANCYL and the mother body.

“Mr Shivambu has made it his full-time job to undermine the organisation and its leadership. We have a warning to many others who might have ideas to follow the same anarchic line, that we are not going to sit on our laurels and become spectators when they are blatantly undermining our organisation,” Masina said.
