Simphiwe Dana declares State Of Emergency

2012-06-16 15:18

Released on the eve of Youth Day, Simphiwe Dana’s State of Emergency set social network Twitter abuzz on Friday afternoon.

The award-winning singer, no stranger to voicing her opinion on political matters, said the song was inspired by socio-political conditions in South Africa and how they “continue to plague our society and what it means for our progress.”

Sending a message to what “seems to be the stillborn” new South Africa, she hoped the song would make people realise “that if we all don’t own our past, our roles in bringing about this pain that seems to be a recurrent and vicious existential cycle – we will again be in a State of Emergency” said Dana.

Introducing the new single on Youtube as her truth, the songstress says the way forward for nation-building is for people to be hands on and sincere.

“The world is crumbling because it can’t contain all the selfishness and greed,” said Dana.

Instead of the youth celebrating Youth Day she wished they would use the time for introspection and to take part in discussions about “who we really are, what we can be and what stands in the way of that.”
