Simply scrumptious in Jozi

2010-04-17 13:25

You

pay more for your cake at Moemas, but it’s worth every melt-in-the-mouth

cent.

This

compact, popular eatery and bakery boasts a window display so scrumptious it

feels indulgent just to eye the merchandise.

Artful

individual cakes range from lemon meringue pies made to look like they are

wearing an old-fashioned jester’s hat, to dark chocolate cupcakes with sour

cream.

One

can also tuck in to the fabulous array of tarts including lemon curd and

mascarpone cheese tarts and delicate vanilla custard tarts decked out with

fresh fruit and freshly made brioche.

A

smorgasbord of muffins and biscotti calls your tastebuds to attention.

The

focus on good quality carries through to the breakfast menu, too.

Perhaps

the most delicious French toast on the planet is to be had at Moemas.

Pieces

of bread soaked for the perfect amount of time in egg and seasoning are fried

in butter and dusted with icing sugar. Served with a sweet fruit compote and

sour cream, this is a treat worth travelling for.

Other

items on the menu include a health breakfast with a fruit salad with no apple.

The

egg dishes are all light and fluffy, without a hint of grease. The bacon is

always crispy and the roasted baby tomatoes are sweet and gooey.

Coffee

lovers, too, will be well satisfied by the brews on offer – and if you want to

give your mouth a ping, try the home-made mint lemonade.

While

you will have to queue for a table if you arrive after 9am, particularly on a

Saturday morning when the Jozi Market is open across the parking lot, it’s worth

the wait.

Once

you are seated in the comfortable moulded plastic chairs and have draped your

cherise napkin over your lap, you can watch the people outside or, better

still, sit inside and watch the baked creations emerging from the kitchen.

If

for some reason you do not believe cake is breakfast food, be sure to ask for a

doggie bag.
