Situation still tense in Tembisa

2011-09-30 12:41

More than 100 people were arrested during a service-delivery protest in Tembisa, on the East Rand, today, according to Ekurhuleni Metro Police.

“The situation is still tense and protesters are still burning tyres and throwing stones,” spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said at noon.

“When police move away from one area to another important area the protests start up again. That is their (protesters) strategy at the moment.”

Residents have been protesting in recent weeks over electricity and other basic service delivery issues.

Ekurhuleni mayor Mondli Gungubele was expected to meet residents on Wednesday.

“The executive mayor will be listening to the people with the sole purpose of ensuring that whatever issues that are causing the protests in Tembisa are finally laid to rest once and for all,” said mayoral spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

“Having said that, though, it is advisable that people do not expect a miracle ... but they can expect an open and robust engagement on the issues so that at the end of the day everyone leaves the meeting satisfied that all the issues they had were dealt with.”
