Six arrested for cargo theft

2011-02-09 14:18

Six people have been arrested for trying to steal R1.6 million worth of cargo from OR Tambo International Airport, police said today.

Captain Dennis Adriao said police arrested them on Monday while they loaded a truck with cellphones from China.

He said one of the men worked in the cargo section at the airport.

“The employee signed off the cellphones to the other five as if they were the rightful owners. Police arrested them at the cargo section,” he said.
The cellphones were destined for distribution in South Africa.

“It is believed that the employee and the other five are all friends. They are all residents in Alexandra [north of Johannesburg].”

They are aged between 26 and 38 years, and will appear in the Kempton Park Magistrates Court tomorrow, Adriao said.
