Six die in Durban crash

2011-05-28 09:18

Six people were killed and one injured when the car they were travelling in smashed into a tree in Durban this morning, ER24 paramedics said.

Spokesperson Derrick Banks said four women and two men died at the scene of the accident, which occurred at around 3am on the corner of Manning and Clark roads in Glenwood.

The injured man was taken to the St Augustine Hospital in critical condition.“It is heartbreaking to lose so many lives in one accident,” said KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Willies Mchunu in a statement.

“This happens immediately after we attended a memorial service of five people who died in Babanango last week.”

Mchunu said provincial government was concerned at the alarming number of fatalities on roads recently.

The accident occurred after the driver of a BMW allegedly lost control and smashed into a tree. The occupants were flung out on impact and the car broke into two pieces.
