Six more measles cases at Joburg jail

2009-12-01 12:45

SIX more people at Johannesburg prison have been moved to an

isolation section after contracting measles, the department of correctional

services said today.

“Last week as part of ongoing monitoring we picked up four cases

and this increased to six,” said spokesperson Sonwabo Mbananga.

They were new prisoners who had entered the facility.

They were inoculated, as were staffers who came into contact with

them.

He rejected a statement by prisoners’ rights activist Golden Miles

Bhudu that there was a lockdown.

“That is an exaggeration,” he said.

The sick prisoners would stay in the isolation wing for 10 days and

might not be able to attend court proceedings during this period to contain the

spread of the illness.

Recently the health department inoculated about 3 000 people at the

prison.
