Slap in the face for speedster Khune

2014-04-01 11:51

Only 10 hours of community service will see Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs skipper Itumeleng Khune escape charges of reckless and negligent driving.

This was the ruling at the Lyttleton Magistrates’ Court in Centurion today where Khune appeared for driving at 173km/h in a 120km/h zone in January.

The charges were withdrawn on condition that the acrobatic goalkeeper undergoes a diversion programme to be completed in three months.

An angry Khune, wearing jeans, white sneakers and a grey jersey, refused to speak to City Press, asking: “Why should I?”

But his lawyer, William Maodi, said the judgment should not be viewed as special treatment of his client and that there was no need for a hoo-ha.

“We made representations to the state prosecutor and were granted a diversion programme to the extent that a failure on Khune’s part to adhere to terms and conditions, [will mean that] the charges will be reinstated,” said Maodi.

When the court case was adjourned, court staff joined Khune taking celebrity photos.
