A small group of about 50 people, most dressed in ANC T-shirts, gathered to pray outside the Mandela House in Vilakazi Street in Soweto this afternoon.

A service for former president Nelson Mandela, which was billed to start at 5pm, only started after 6pm, with some members of the ANC singing revolutionary songs and church hymns.

After putting up posters on street poles and giving away ANC T-shirts, branded with Mandela’s face, the group lit up candles and shouted “Long live Mandela”.

The ANC Gauteng spokesperson, Dumisa Ntuli, took to the stage and started the night prayer session with strong words, saying people should stop speculating about Mandela’s health.

“This prayer service is for Tata to live forever with us. Others are already speculating about him and his health. They must leave everything in the hands of God. Whatever God decides, we will accept it. We will always be with you, Tata,” said Ntuli.

About four pastors clad in black robes read a script from Psalm 71 verse 1 to 9 and asked God to protect Mandela and his family.

After the words of encouragement the crowd sang and dispersed.

ANCYL spokesperson Bandile Masuku, who issued a statement earlier inviting journalists to the prayer meeting, said the small crowd gathered in Soweto was sufficient, as a bigger crowd would have required them to get permission from authorities.
