Small businesses the solution to jobs crisis

The problem of unemployment in South Africa is made worse when small businesses are not supported. The focus is on big business and the government, which cannot create any jobs.

Today if you go to any government department’s website, you won’t see a single job vacancy in most of the departments.

Yet there are long lines of people waiting to be served at the department of trade and industry, for example.

If you phone a government call centre, you will wait 30 to 40 minutes for your call to be answered.

There is no one to serve the masses due to the failure of the state to create jobs.

Ask Cosatu how many people it has employed to reduce unemployment.

Most of the youth are not employed. Government departments should hire young people who can’t get jobs in government industries and factories.

Government financial institutes should finance small developing businesses and make it easier for small businesses to employ people.

Small business has proven internationally to be the main creaters of jobs. Big businesses and government are failures in terms of job creation.

Higher electricity prices, higher fuel prices and higher rental prices have resulted in many businesses shutting down, which has contributed to unemployment – especially for young people.

Back in the 90s there was a job surplus in South Africa. We saw companies looking for people to employ and not finding any.

Mines had to recruit people from other countries, including Lesotho and Mozambique. We no longer hear anything like this.
