Soccer crash driver arrested

2012-11-12 09:24

The driver of a bakkie which collided with a minibus taxi, killing four soccer players in Limpopo, has been arrested.

The police’s Brigadier Hangwane Mulaudzi said the 36-year-old man was treated for minor injuries after the crash and was then arrested for drunken and reckless or negligent driving.

Four soccer players were killed when the bakkie hit the minibus on its side along the R71 near Polokwane last night.

The taxi landed on its side in the path of oncoming traffic, where a bus carrying Zion Christian Church members crashed into it.

The soccer players were members of the Polokwane City football club and had been travelling from Oscar Mphetha stadium, where they had played their National First Division match against FC AK.

Four players died at the scene while seven others were taken to hospital.

The man was expected to appear in the Mankweng Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.
