The rules of engagement for food consumption and pairing were rewritten on Thursday night at Melrose Arch in Joburg.

Have you ever tried chicken, strawberries and Belgian chocolate ice cream all at once? If that’s not your thing, why don’t you try beef medallions with macadamia nut brittle ice cream? Otherwise the Asian chicken soup with lemon sorbet would do the trick.

No, this is not some pregnant woman’s midnight craving, but haute cuisine inspired by the ice cream maker Häagen-Dazs. The brave indulged.

It was a chilly night as Häagen-Dazs threw the decadent party in the middle of the Melrose Arch Piazza. In the illuminated 8m snow globe, 12 strangers sussed each other out, as snowflakes gently fell on them, to stand a chance of going to Paris with whoever they liked the most in a speed-dating kind of event.

The vivacious Jeannie D, or shall we say a slimmed-down version in a short green dress, hosted the event and it was a miracle she didn’t shiver in that cold. She was mildly entertaining, especially with a crowd of people who kept straight faces most of the time.

The night was proof that ice cream does not have to be dessert; it’s part of the main course.
