Social – Drum Darlings awards honour 10 of the best entertainers

2013-11-10 06:00

From rising stars to legends, Drum Darlings celebrated “black excellence” in fine style at the Birchwood Hotel & OR Tambo Conference Centre in Kempton Park.

The inaugural awards, held on Thursday, had all the trimmings of an event that deserves a spot on Jozi’s social calendar.

The ceremony honoured 10 of the best in the South African entertainment industry – living or dead. Lira won the overall award.

Drum editor Makhosazana Zwane Siguqa said: “Drum magazine has been at the forefront of black excellence for over 60 years. From Can Themba to Alfred Khumalo and to the current generation of entertainers, excellence has been the core value of Drum magazine.”

There was hardly any space to move on the red carpet as guest after guest in designer garb fought for a place in front of the flashing cameras.

From David Tlale designs to obscure frocks, Jozi celebs posed and smiled for the cameras for hours on end until Lupi Ngcayisa had to put his foot down and declare the red carpet closed so that the ceremony could kick off.

Strictly Come Dancing finalist Lalla Hiriyama, in a Tlale creation, got the most stares for her revealing black dress.

The prime suspect on the fashion front, Moshidi Motshegwa, failed dismally to display any fashion sense in a frumpy brown dress.

Rising star award recipient and Isibaya actor Nomzamo Mbatha competed for attention with Queen of Bling Khanyi Mbau as both were dressed in matching skimpy and tight-fitting cream dresses.

Former Boom Shaka member Thembi Seete, dressed in a Skhalo design, said that her new single, Junthoha Lerole, would debut on Metro FM on Saturday and that she was pleased with her nomination.
