Social – Football’s who’s who get into reality TV

2013-05-12 10:00

Football head honchos came out to play – not on the field, but at The Venue in Green Park, Sandton.

The Ke Yona Team Search, a Nedbank-sponsored football reality TV show, was the big occasion.

The event was staged last Friday.

Guests were chauffeured in BMWs from the parking area to the green carpet entrance, a ride that took less than two minutes. Not that we minded.

Moët & Chandon was the drink of choice during the mingling period. The mkhulus of football – Mike “Sporo” Mangena, Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba, Khabo Zondo and Owen “Rubber Doll” da Gama – were there. They’re tasked with discovering talent on the show.

Just before 8.30pm, the guests were shown to their reserved tables for a three-course meal that included a mozzarella salad starter, beef fillet or chicken velouté mains and a white-chocolate mousse dessert.

TV personality Dineo Ranaka did a great job as the emcee. Pity I can’t say the same about her dull greenish dress. She called on guests to be on their best behaviour, lest they get into trouble with the newshounds. Whatever, Miss emcee!

Ranaka then gave the reins to Nedbank’s marketing executive, Sydney Mbhele, who gave a light-hearted speech that got the guests laughing and clapping. His “I feel like a pregnant mother” banter got the loudest cheer – partly because of his bulging tummy.

SABC1 acting general manager Sam Mpherwane gets the nod for worst dressed for not observing protocol. Jeans, sneakers and a sport sweater were

just plain disrespectful.

When the formalities were done and dusted, and food was served, everyone loosened up as the music was pumped.
