Hormones raged as Cosmo’s Sexiest Man of the Year was crowned this week. Lesley Mofokeng witnessed the hysteria

It was like a scene out of the movie Magic Mike. Hot-blooded women screaming and preparing to throw themselves into the muscled arms of men with chiselled torsos.

Bonang Matheba in a flirtatious, pink, strapless gown with a dangerously high slit was the enabler-in-chief, fanning the fires of lust and gratuitous, almost perverted, desire. She was a great tease and an amazing host for the reveal of Cosmopolitan Sexiest SA Man of the Year at Room Five in Rivonia on Wednesday night.

The 12 hunks (two gave the event a miss) were presented in their glory in the Cosmo Sexiest SA Men Calendar?–?some with the aid of photoshop. In real life, a few of them appeared shorter and less glossy.

But that did not stop the hordes of women from following the naked torsos around and snapping away furiously with their cellphones or rubbing themselves up against their pecs and abs.

While the beefcakes filed on stage shirtless, one contestant?– Mr August a.k.a. AKA?–?was nowhere to be seen. It was like running away from the school yard brawl because the Prince of Rap was not as buffed as the rest of the boys.

TV personality Lunga Shabalala said he took part in the competition “for fun, with zero marketing”, so he didn’t expect to win. He has bigger fish to fry, like his new police drama series coming to SABC1 later this month, where he will be “going international”.

His colleague Zizo Beda looked striking in a yellow-print minidress. She was on the money when she whispered in my ear that Top Billing’s Jonathan Boynton-Lee was the frontrunner?–?but she was there to cheer on Shabalala nevertheless. As it turned out, Boynton-Lee was announced as the winner of the popular vote.

Right up front and screaming her lungs out was Matheba’s colleague, Jeannie D, there to support her boyfriend and Mr October, Brennan Wright. Looking every bit the star in a yellow bandage dress, her personality shone through. She took Wright’s loss graciously.

Ross Jack and ChianoSky provided the entertainment in between. But what was Jack wearing? I’m talking about the hideous floral shirt ripped off from Kim Kardashian’s infamous Met Gala dress?– and the shoes were an eyesore.

Note to Jack: If you fancy yourself a hip-hop star, you may want to ditch the moccasins.

There to witness the crowning of his successor was last year’s winner, Maps Maponyane. He was tight-lipped about his recent Las Vegas trip. Maybe he was applying the adage “What happens in Vegas?...”

Other celebs who stopped over to ogle were Boitumelo Thulo in her new banging body since she became a fitness model, and Isidingo stars Loyiso MacDonald, Tema Sebopedi and Michaela Russell.

It was a girl’s night out with finger snacks galore and the sponsored alcoholic drink. But on the downside, did the bar really have to charge R20 for a small bottle of mineral water?
