The SA’s Got Talent curtain fell at the Alexander Theatre in Braamfontein, Joburg, on Thursday evening, giving the audience South Africa’s own version of pop star Justin Bieber.

Johnny Apple, the 16-year-old pupil from George in Western Cape, was crowned winner of the 2013 season. With his boyish charm and silky voice, he is sure to set many young girls’ hearts aflutter.

The youngster was born Juan Appelgrein and opted for the alias.

The finale was thin on notable faces bar new face of Inecto Plus Gail Mabalane and Rhythm City stars Amo Chidi and Itumeleng Bokaba.

Also present was Harold van Buuren, a judge from So You Think You Can Dance – probably there to take notes – as well as Strictly Come Dancing judge Tebogo Kgobokoe.

Obviously Gail came to support hubby and judge Kabelo Mabalane, who commented that the talent this year was “unrivalled” and this season has been his “best so far”.

Gail hid her beauty behind a dodgy black hat, or was it a case of a bad Inecto hair day?

I would have loved to see the Mabalanes hold hands, though. I guess I will have to wait until next season.

Chidi and Bokaba were there “in support of young South African talent on display” and jointly said they were neither disappointed nor excited about Apple’s victory.

Entertainment was provided by the energetic Dr Malinga, who performed his runaway hit Via Orlando before the winner was announced.

The irrepressible musician enthused that SA has talent, and coming from the man who used to dance and gyrate to bring in customers to a furniture shop, we certainly believe him.

After Malinga’s performance, the winners were announced and freebies of T-shirts and chocolate were handed out, which almost resulted in a stampede as people clamoured for the goodies.

Apple was presented with his R250?000 cheque, while Kabelo’s “favourite son” and young rapper Lil Diezo made second place and walked away with R30?000.

The Justin Leigh Band settled for third, taking home R20?000.
