Social – Kelly Khumalo’s swan song, a cheeky diamond and a bad hair day

Predictably, there were no feathers at the launch of the Feather Awards this week. Instead, there was a cheeky pink “diamond” – on the awards’ new-look trophy.

The dress code of choice at yesterday’s brunch was laid back with jeans and T-shirts.

The intimate party was held at the charming Emoyeni Conference Centre with sweeping views of Joburg’s northern suburbs in the background.

This is the fifth installation of the irreverent awards that honour celebrities found to be inspirational and scandalous by the gay and lesbian community. Who would have guessed that when the controversy-prone Kelly Khumalo emotionally sang My Journey she meant it would be to the police station? After her performance, Khumalo and her dancer sister, Zandi, handed themselves over to the police in Hillbrow where she was wanted for a case of assault. The man who single-handedly put cool into geeky with his Clark Kent spectacles is a nominee for the hunk of the year and best-styled male awards, and it really is not hard to see why.

Ever the attention seeker, Somizi Mhlongo rocked up looking like an impoverished Arabian sheik. Oh, but he’s such a fun sport as he teased and joked with everyone bursting into “Hallelujas” with gay abandon (pun intended).

Anele Mdoda braved a bad hair day and stepped out looking like a bat out of hell. I get that the event was relaxed and all, but not brushing your hair before going ... gross.

Strictly Come Dancing finalist and Vuzu presenter Lalla Hirayama will be hosting the awards on November 14 and revealed that she will be decked out in David Tlale.

The new-look Feathers trophy was unveiled and features, well, feathers and a giant purple “diamond”. The theme this year is Haute Couture.

High profile nominees include the Guptas, Savita Mbuli and Mandla Mandela for the drama queen award. Let’s see if the winner will be on hand to accept his or her hard-earned cup.
