Man about town Maps Maponyane was this week crowned Joop ambassador. Lesley Mofokeng attended the celebrations.

It has been a long and hard battle – and it’s Maps Maponyane who galloped past the finish line first.

For the past few months, social networks have been watching with keen interest the contest between two of Mzansi’s talented hunks, Maponyane and Lunga Shabalala, slugging it out for the title of ambassador for the French perfume Joop Homme.

They have had to organise flash mobs and dance at Maponya Mall, and go out on blind dates with fans – anything to prove that they were the better man.

And on Thursday night, on the roof top of the Reef Hotel, Elevate night club saw the coronation of the bespectacled son of soccer legend Marks Mafa Maponyane.

Gracious in victory, Maponyane said he respected Shabalala, the Selimathunzi co-presenter and once the face of Calvin Klein underwear, for his competitive spirit.

Maponyane’s star has consistently been on the rise since his debut on the ramps of SA Fashion Week as a model and after he made it to the top 10 list of GQ SA’s best-dressed men.

He has OCD, his own range of formal wear in collaboration with Augustine clothing, and currently stars in the WeChat TV commercials and billboards across the country.

Maponyane is considered a style authority and one of the country’s most eligible bachelors.

Partying with Maponyane in the VVIP section of the club were businesswomen Marang Setshwaelo (in a posh mesh-like kaftan) and Phindi Mkhabela, both of Dreamcatcher.

Philipe Mazibuko also let loose a bit on the dance floor, but he faded in comparison to Ephraim Molingoana’s retro dance moves inspired by the 80s and 90s music blaring from the speakers.

Project manager, the always dapper Siphiwe Mpye, was diplomatic, saying either one of them would have made a worthy winner.

But he wouldn’t say how much the ambassadorship is worth.

Phew! What a year Maponyane has had.
