It must have been one of Nothemba Madumo’s most embarrassing moments.

The MetroFM jazz guru drew gasps when she announced that Madala Kunene would be honoured posthumously. The only problem is that the man, known as the king of the Zulu guitar, is alive and well and was sitting in the hall of the Southern Sun Hotel in Pretoria where the Tribute to SA Heroes Concert Awards Gala Dinner took place.

Jaws dropped when Kunene went on stage to accept the award and the red-faced Madumo had to do some nifty damage control.

“I did not kill him,” was her lame defence to the boo boo. She swiftly apologised to the living legend and ever the gentleman Kunene accepted the apology by saying: “Maybe it is because I have not been actively involved in the industry.”

The hotel in Pretoria central was a hive of activity as families of music legends, sponsors and officials gathered to pay homage to the heroes and heroines of the South African music industry on Thursday night.

After the long and unwarranted speeches from sponsors and stakeholders the first honourees for the musicians’ category were announced.

PJ Powers, Sello Galane, Barney Rachabane were applauded for their contribution to the local music industry.

The late Victor Ntoni was honoured posthumously. His two sons accepted the award.

The late Mseleku talents Bheki and Wendy were also recognised.

It was here that Madumo slipped and named Kunene as another posthumous honouree.

Other winners included music promoters such as Morris Roda, Chris Ndaba, Zanele Mbokazi and Bruce Gapane.
