Soldier’s bail revoked in army ammo case

2013-08-21 08:48

A soldier accused of stealing army ammunition had his bail revoked in the Lenasia Magistrates’ court for allegedly contacting a State witness.

The Star reported the court heard yesterday that Diphang Motloung allegedly tried to convince the witness to change his testimony.

Motloung, his son Thabang and another soldier Teboho Motaung, as well as Dave Sheer Guns director Gareth de Nysschen and general manager Efthimios Demis Karamitsos face charges related to 200?000 rounds of ammunition allegedly stolen from a Lenasia army base.

According to a State witness’s statement, the ammunition was sold to Dave Sheer gun shop.

Thabang Motloung was also charged for allegedly threatening the investigating officer.

The State previously opposed De Nysschen being granted bail.

Magistrate Syfred Mati granted his bail at R15?000, but said he needed to provide R2 million within a month as a guarantee against him skipping bail.

De Nysschen’s guarantee period was extended until September 2.
