Solidarity serves Aurora liquidation application

2011-05-20 14:35

A liquidation application of R3.1 million has been served on Aurora Empowerment Systems by Solidarity.

This first application was presented in the hope of forcing the mine to “pay outstanding salaries or close its doors”, the trade union’s spokesperson Gideon du Plessis said today.

He appealed to the departments of mineral resources and water affairs for their help in saving the mining asset from “total collapse” under the management of Aurora.

Aurora had until May 31 to oppose the liquidation application.

If the application was not opposed, it would be heard in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on June 7.

Du Plessis alleged that Aurora had sold mine assets as scrap for short-term gains.

“Not one of the 13 shafts at the Grootvlei and Orkney mines is currently in a working condition and most of the shafts have either been stripped bare or have been flooded,” he said.

Earlier in this month, Congress of SA Trade Unions general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi severely criticised President Jacob Zuma’s nephew Khulubuse Zuma, one of the owners of Aurora Mines, for donating election funds to the ANC instead of paying his workers.
