Sona debate is hot air

2014-02-23 14:00

The recent debates on the state of the nation address (Sona) reflect nothing more than political gimmicks.

I have noticed how MPs (particularly from the opposition) use the platform not to debate the real issues contained in Sona, but as a diversion to raise issues that have nothing to do with the speech itself.

This tendency of turning Parliament into a talk shop has been going on for a while now.

The vulgar use of language is another problem.

MPs don’t respect parliamentary rules. They seem to enjoy insulting one another.

These days, Parliament is not used to deal with policy and legislative matters, but rather as a political beauty contest.

It will benefit us if those abusing parliamentary rules are taken to task. This will ensure that our Parliament regains its credibility.

We elected representatives to represent us as voters, not to display their egos in Parliament.

There are many challenges facing the country, including poverty, unemployment and inequality.

These are the issues that should be occupying the minds of our MPs and not these political gimmicks that we always see.
