Electronic music lovers have just been treated to perhaps the most highly anticipated release in almost a decade?–?Felix Laband has just produced three hot new tunes.

Anyone with a casual awareness of his work will remember that he last dropped an album in 2005. That was the landmark project titled Dark Days Exit, a record that arguably stands to this day as one of the greatest South African electronic albums in history.

This makes Laband’s release of new tracks on his SoundCloud channel something of an occasion.

They are respectively titled The Savage Bush Hotel, Ding Dong Thing and Squeeze The Trigger.

Ding Dong Thing opens with a voice sample of a press conference by President Jacob Zuma’s legal counsel, describing his back-and-forth appeal process as a “ding dong thing”.

It builds the voice-over’s rhythmic elements into a slow swirl that turns into an infectious jam. It’s light-hearted and catchy.

Squeeze The Trigger has the dark appeal of a 2am drive from a nightclub. It’s vibey and groove-heavy. It’s also built around a voice sample, this time of a man instructing a friend on how to use a gun.

The track includes a call-and-response pattern that tricks listeners into collective participation in the song’s forward charge. The melodic lift wraps itself beautifully around the crisp bass and treble beat outline.

Laband’s propulsive rhythm style is still as fresh as it was when he last served us with a touch of his genius.

Groovemongers and party people everywhere can now earnestly dig into some new material. We at #Trending think the tracks make the long wait worth it.
