Spotlight on Bucs new coach as PSL returns to action

2012-09-14 08:56

The spotlight of this weekend’s batch of Absa Premiership matches will undoubtedly be cast on Roger de Sa as he starts his tenure as Orlando Pirates coach.

The Buccaneers, who are still reeling from a four-match winless streak, travel to Phokeng in Rustenburg to face Platinum Stars in a 3pm kick-off.

However, Premiership action resumes tonight when Moroka Swallows clash against rookies University of Pretoria while Maritzburg United host Free State Stars at Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg.

Both games start at 8pm.

The Premiership stood idle last week to accommodate the Fifa calendar in which Bafana Bafana was also in action.

Meanwhile, De Sa said he did not ring major changes ahead of the Stars encounter.

“I had a few training sessions to change the team but the players were very supportive,” De Sa told City Press.

“The players want to get over the 3-0 loss to (Moroka) Swallows (a fortnight ago). I believe we can get something out of this game (against Stars).”

The former Bidvvest Wits mentor also spoke highly of his injured striker Benni McCarthy who has been sidelined by a hamstring injury.

“A Pirates with and without Benni is not the same. He would have played a big part,” said De Sa. (Read more on De Sa in City Press on Sunday)

Elsewhere, Chippa United have reunited with their coach Roger Sikhakhane, whom they have recalled after the Phillippi-based club parted ways with Manqoba Mngqithi after just two matches in charge.

United remains one of the the four Premiership clubs that are yet to register a victory in the new season.

Other sides without wins are Golden Arrows, AmaZulu – who are both placed 15th and 16th on the table – and SuperSport United (10th spot).
