Spread’s the word: Savour at 15 on Orange

2012-01-20 10:19

Setting:
Housed in the ultra-modern black and chrome 15 on Orange hotel on Orange street, this eatery sits in the centre of the hotel’s reception, but it doesn’t feel like it. On a mezzanine level, the tables are separated by curtains that are substantial enough to offer privacy but don’t make the place feel like a series of cubicles. While it doesn’t have a view of the mountain or the sea, it is a plush urban setting perfect for when the notorious southwester blows and you need to find shelter.

Spread:

The starters are arranged on a long table that incorporates every

delight from sea and land?– fresh oysters, just-made sushi as well as

parma ham, olives and cheese for the more Mediterrean-minded and freshly

prepared salads for those watching their weight. The main course is

fairly standard fare of either seafood stew, beef or chicken, but the

dessert table is out of this world and culminates in a chocolate

fountain.

Most delic ious:

While the marshmallows soake d in chocolate were a great way to finish, for me the delicious array of salamis, hams, roasted peppers and olives were worthy of a second plateful. Choice in every way.

Service:

Perhaps the best thing about the service is that it comes with bottomless champagne?– that’s right, Graham Beck bubbly, either regular or pink, until you can’t drink any more. So arrange for a taxi home or draw straws for a designated driver. The waitrons are quick to clear plates and refill glasses – as should be the case, after all, everyone’s helping themselves to the food.

Value for Money:
At R245 a head it might feel a little steep, but if you are a champers and oysters person you get great value for money. Vegetarians might find it hard to eat enough artichokes to justify the cost, but it really is a lovely place for a Sunday lunch.
