State steps in at Mangaung prison

2013-10-09 17:08

In an unprecedented move, the department of correctional services has taken over the Mangaung Prison, which was run by the security company G4S.

City Press has learnt that the department has activated the “step-in” clause in its contract with the company to bring normality back to the prison, which has seen prisoners attacking warders and holding a female staffer hostage.

A special management team under the leadership of Gauteng correctional services deputy commissioner Zacharia Modise will be running the facility, acting national commissioner Nontsikelelo Jolingana told Sapa.

Jolingana said the management of the facility were informed this morning that they would take over the management of the prison.

Inmates and staff members were also told of the change.

The main reason for the intervention was concern for the safety of inmates and workers, she said.

Workers at the facility had been complaining about working conditions and understaffing.

More than 300 warders were fired last month after they staged a strike to protest about conditions.

G4S’s managing director of the Mangaung Prison, Johan Theron, did not immediately answer his phone when called for comment.
