2011-01-24 14:11

The water affairs department is monitoring the Vaal and Orange river catchment after a rise in water levels in the four largest dams in the country, due to more rain in the past week, it said today.

“The Vaal Dam is currently 99% full. The current inflow is 520 cubic metres per second,” the department said.

Three flood gates were opened, bringing the outflow to 400 cubic metres per second.

Two more gates were due to be opened today to increase the outflow to 600 cubic metres per second.

The Gariep dam is 109% full with outflow at 1?200 cubic metres per second. Capacity at the Vanderkloof dam is at 110%, with inflow at 1?400 and outflow at 1?650 cubic metres per second.

The flow predicted in the Orange River is 3?150 cubic metres per second.

The capacity at the Bloemhof dam is 96%, with an outflow of 200 cubic metres per second.

The department planned to increase the outflow to 400 cubic metres per second at 4pm, to 700 at 5pm, 1?000 at 6pm to 1?300 at 6am tomorrow.
