Steps you can take to retain a Gershowitz.

Dr Alexander says that while tablets that stop the balding process can come in handy, you have to take them your whole life.

“Hair transplants and pills are not a cure; they help control the process,” he says. Here are steps that you can take to prevent hair loss or damage:

» Keep stress levels as low as possible by doing stress-busting activities such as yoga, meditation or massage.

» Medication can have drastic effects on hair, so be cautious if you are taking medicine such as Vitamin A, testosterone products, beta blockers, certain antidepressants or certain cholesterol-lowering agents.

“Speak to your doctor if you are unsure, and find out if there are any alternative treatment options to consider,” says Gershowitz.

» Avoid harsh chemicals or products such as chlorine, hair dyes and perming solution.

» Diet plays an important role in maintaining healthy hair, so eat foods rich in calcium and protein. Regular intake of water is also essential. Supplements such as Thiamine (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Niacin (B3), Pantothenic Acid (B5), Biotin (B7), Cobalamin (B12) and Pyridoxine (B6) are known to aid in the prevention of balding.

“While the methods listed above will help you retain your healthy head of hair for longer, in the case of hereditary loss of hair, there is almost nothing that can be done to prevent hair from falling out,” says Gershowitz.
