Strauss-Kahn lawyers seek bail hearing

2011-05-19 08:43

New York – Defence lawyers for Iternational Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn are seeking to win his release at a new bail hearing today, proposing strict conditions such as an electronic ankle tag, CNN said.

“It looks like the defence will go back to court tomorrow to ask for bail for their client,” CNN legal expert Jeff Toobin said.

“They think that they have a package that the court will accept,” he said, adding it included “very restrictive conditions” that would “make his escape from the United States impossible”.

The IMF chief is facing a new hearing tomorrow when a decision by the grand jury on whether to indict him on charges of sexual assault and attempted rape in a Manhattan hotel are expected to be unveiled.

A New York judge on Monday denied him bail despite the offer of $1 million (R6.9 million) in cash as a guarantee, deeming that the veteran French politician was a flight risk. France and the US have no extradition agreement.

But Toobin said the defence proposals for bail included “not to leave an apartment, not to leave a hotel room or office.

And an enormous amount of money. Plus, the surrender of his passport”.
