Students focus on top eight

2012-04-19 10:25

Although his young side has not yet escaped relegation, Wits coach Roger De Sa says his players are focused on a top-eight finish with five games left in the Premiership season.

The Clever Boys are winless in their past 10 games, and after a 1-1 draw against Ajax Cape Town at Bidvest Stadium last night, they find themselves in 13th spot on the log.

Wits are seven points ahead of second-from-bottom Santos, but they are the same margin behind AmaZulu in coveted eighth position.

“We were six points above a team that was in a relegation battle coming into this game, but we were also five points behind AmaZulu who were in eighth position,” De Sa said.

“I think five is lower than six, so we’ll rather catch the guys who are five points ahead.

“The motivation was to try to get into the top eight with another win, and hopefully have a go at it.

“I still think we should be positive and try to get into the top eight.”

But De Sa admitted that both his team and the visiting Ajax side put on a poor display in their midweek fixture.

“I thought it was a poor performance all round, from both sides, really,” De Sa said.

“It wasn’t the greatest game of football, unfortunately ... both teams were a little scared to lose.”

The Wits mentor said his young outfit was still in a learning phase.

“I just hope we can get one more result and then we can give the youngsters a good run with confidence,” De Sa said.
