Study group pays off for matrics

2011-01-07 07:10

During the protracted civil servants’ strike they studied while their peers stayed away or played games in the school grounds.

Now the efforts of two learners from Orlando West High School in Soweto who formed a study group during the strike have paid off.

Nkosingiphile Mbanjwa decided to repeat matric this year after he did not get satisfactory results. This time around his performance improved and he obtained a pass with admission to a degree.

Although he has not seen his statement of results, he was happy. “I’m happy because I qualify to go to university. I can study electrical or mechanical engineering.”

His friend, Sakhile Mcunu, also passed but with an admission to a higher certificate. He has decided to go back to school to improve his marks.

“I want to do a degree in civil engineering and I want to get seven distinctions this year,” he said.

Both friends agreed that forming the study group paid off.

Mbanjwa said: “It is good to study with others because you learn from each other.”

During the civil servants’ strike, City Press spoke to Mbanjwa and Mcunu about the study group that would eventually yield positive results for them. Click here to watch the video.
