Sugarcane serial killer to be sentenced

2011-01-19 07:02

Convicted “sugarcane” serial killer, Thozamile Taki, will be sentenced in the Durban High Court today for the murder of 13 women.

After killing the women, Taki dumped their bodies in sugarcane plantations in Umzinto, KwaZulu-Natal, and tea plantations in Port St Johns, in the Eastern Cape.

Gender bodies called for a stiff sentence for the man who was found guilty on all 26 charges against him.

The ANC Women’s League said that the sentencing should serve as a deterrent to woman abuse.

“The sentencing should send a clear message that those who are abusing women’s rights will soon have no place to hide,” the league’s provincial secretary Nonhlanhla Khoza said.

She said the league was expecting about 600 people to picket outside the court during the sentencing.

The Commission for Gender Equality also called for a harsh sentence.

“The commission unequivocally calls for the stiffest sentence in this matter. A precedent has to be set in affirming the safety of all women and children by meeting a harsh sentence against this serial murderer,” the commission said in a statement.
