The Gauteng Sansui Summer Cup is neither as big nor as glitzy as the Vodacom Durban July and the J&B Met, but the organisers went all out yesterday to match South Africa’s big two horse races.

There were helicopter rides, parachutists who landed on the racetrack, a celebrity dash and men racing in mankinis.

A clutch of well-known celebs, including Top Billing’s Simba Mhere, took the chopper from the Rand Airport to the Turffontein Racecourse.

Missing in action were socialite Khanyi Mbau, actresses and TV personalities Bridget Masinga and Lalla Hirayama.

Two of the best-dressed celebrities present were the face of the Summer Cup, Dineo Moeketsi, who wore a flowing peach number by Quiteria & George and Top Billing presenter Lorna Maseko in a hit-and-miss long green number.

Metro FM DJ Refiloe Mpakanyane looked stylish in a flowing pink summer dress, which showed off her long, toned legs. Also spotted was new Generations actress Letoya Makhene, who wore a sequined gold and white kaftan with glittery silver shoes.

Strictly Come Dancing winner Zakeeya Patel wore a short white dress that showed off her curves, while the Face of Fitness 2012, Stacey Holland, stunned in a long, off-white mermaid dress.

Despite all the glam, leading designer Gert-Johan Coetzee was underwhelmed by the celebrity dress sense at the event.

“This year, the women didn’t go the extra mile, but the guys went all-out to look good,” he said.

He certainly wasn’t referring to model Maps Maponyane, who turned up in a blazer and casual trousers.

On the track, favourite Louis the King won the R2?million Summer Cup. Second was his unfancied stablemate, Killua Castle, and another unfancied runner, Judicial, came third.
