Sundowns kick off new season against ‘closed book’ United

2014-08-08 10:21

Mamelodi Sundowns will begin the defence of their league title when they host Maritzburg United at Loftus stadium in Pretoria in the only fixture of the new Absa Premiership campaign tonight.

Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has described United as a “closed book at this stage because we have not seen them in any preseason (action).

“Unlike us, who are a bit in the dark about the opposition, they have been able to see how we played during the preseason and the MTN8,” Mosimane said during the midweek launch of the new Premiership season.

United held Sundowns to a 2-2 draw in a corresponding fixture last season and a 1-1 stalemate on the final day of the season when Sundowns officially lifted the premiership title.

Sundowns started on a bad note last weekend when they were knocked out of the MTN8 Cup by Platinum Stars.

The 2-1 defeat means that the star-studded Sundowns side must appease their fans with a positive league start against United.

Sundowns will have a say in United’s match day team selection as they have three players on loan in coach Steve Komphela’s side.

Sundowns have enforced a clause that prevents their loaned out players from playing against them in official matches. These players are Sibusiso Khumalo, Abel Mabaso and Kwanda Mngonyama.

As if this is not bad enough, United are yet to obtain work permits for their four foreign players: John Pantsil, Mike Mohammed (both from Ghana), Khumbulani Banda and Terrence Mandaza (both Zimbabwe).

As for the side’s preparedness for the new season, Komphela said on his club website: “I would rather underpromise and overperform. The important thing is to deliver on what you have promised.”
