A man who allegedly shot dead his two stepdaughters was killed in a shoot-out with police in Phoagoaneng village in Lebowakgomo, Limpopo.

Colonel Ronel Otto said today police went to the village last night after they received information that the 39-year-old had been spotted drinking there in a tavern.

“However, when the police entered, the man pulled out his firearm and fired shots.”

Police returned fire and the man was killed in the ensuing shoot-out.

The man is alleged to have killed his 8- and 10-year-old stepdaughters on Wednesday.

He apparently fetched the stepdaughters and his son from their grandmother’s house and took them to his wife’s workplace.

Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said at the time: “Seemingly, he could not talk to her as she was busy and apparently [he] went back outside. Without uttering any word, he fired two shots killing one [of the girls] while the other one fled.”

The man then returned to the grandmother’s home with his two-year-old son. Along the way, he handed the boy to a friend.

He found the older girl at the grandmother’s house. He allegedly shot her twice at close range and ran away.

Mulaudzi said the motive for the killing was unclear. The boy had since been reunited with his mother.
